The 2008 Microentrepreneur of the Year

The 2008 Microentrepreneur of the Year Award (MOTY) Awards Program was launched last May 13, 2008 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Malate, Manila. The event was attended by MCPI President Mr. Rolly Victoria and MCPI Executive Director, Mr. Edgardo Garcia, and members of the MOTY National Selection Committee – Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr, (chair), Mr. Sanjiv Vohra (co-chair), Mr. Antonino L. Alindogan Jr., Mr. Fernando Zobel de Ayala, and Ms. Tessie Sy-Coson.

The 2008 Citi Microentrepreneur of the Year (MOTY) Awards is the sixth run of the awards program in the Philippines. The program’s pilot run was held in the year 2002 in celebration of Citi’s centennial year in the Philippines. The program primarily aims to elevate awareness of and provide support for microfinance by recognizing outstanding microentrepreneurs.

The past runs of the awards program raised substantial public awareness about microfinance and the current state of microenterprise development in the country. Awardees presented themselves as role models worthy of emulation by other microentrepreneurs and aspiring microentrepreneurs.

The objectives of the MOTY Awards program are:

  • To honor and give due recognition to outstanding Filipino microentrepreneurs for their exemplary performance and accomplishments.

  • To provide incentives to microentrepreneurs to enhance technology, improve production and accelerate incomegenerating activities.

  • To highlight awardees who can serve as models of inspiration to other microentrepreneurs.

  • To create greater public awareness and build support for microfinance and microenterprise development as a tool for employment generation and poverty reduction.

There are two award categories for MOTY – Masikap and Maunlad. The Masikap Award is open to microentrepreneurs who successfully started a business that is now a reliable source of income for the family. On the other hand, the Maunlad Award is open to microentrepreneurs that have grown a business to a level that is now generating employment for people apart from household or family members.

The 2007 Citi MOTY national winners last year were:
Mrs. Milagros Dorado, a duck raiser and duck egg producer from Asuncion, Davao del Norte for the Masikap category. While, Mr. Henry Bayaua, a manufacturer of agricultural metal crafts in San Manuel, Isabela for the Maunlad category.

Further details on the 2008 MOTY criteria of nominees, timeline and nomination and selection process are provided in this web link, MOTY timeline . MCPI will be accepting nominations for each category from MFI Networks until July 11, 2008.
