In January 1996, seventeen women-entrepreneurs who were having a hard time addressing their capital needs,organized themselves as a cooperative inMaranding,Lala, Lanao del Norte. With just a starting capital of PhP19,500, the Maranding Women Investors Multi-purpose Cooperative(MWIMPC) was established. A “cooperative with a heart”, MWIMPC is guided by its mission “to undertake holistic programs and services to economically active and marginal sectors in the community enabling them to enjoy life with quality and dignity.” It has now expanded its operations outside of Lanao del Norte.
The cooperative provides financial services such as savings, credit, insurance, money transfer, and investment. Its non-financial programs include technical assistance, business development, livelihood, environmental conservation and protection; and social services such as maternal and child health care and wellness. It also engages in spiritual and political advocacy.
